Exciting News

In case you have yet to hear, I am excited to announce that I have a permanent space in downtown Ann Arbor with my sisters/business partners. Imagine Three Beauty Studio is located at 201 E Liberty and it houses a fully functioning salon, retail space for natural makeup and hair products, as well as an office space for me to conduct client meetings.

I have been so proud to be partnered with my sisters for several years now, offering the option of all three services to brides as well as some of our own creative ventures. It still seems like a dream though that we are now able to be housed together in such a great location.

One of the most exciting parts of this whole venture is to see my sister Julie realize her goal of offering hair services that don’t compromise health for beauty and vise versa. Her goal with the salon was to offer as much of a chemical free experience as possible and products that contain natural and organic ingredients. Hannah is also able to provide natural cosmetics and skin care products in the retail space, application and as a consultant for your own makeup bag.

Mlive released an article about the venture today where you can get more details and view some images of the space.

2013 in review-part 1

2013 was quite a different year for me, both personally and professionally. A good chunk of the year was determined by a sweet surprise (in as much of a surprise as a baby can be) named Aela Kate. I had three gracious couples who trusted me to photograph their big day with a plus 1 that may have been more of a hinderance than a help. I expected the worst photographing weddings while being so pregnant, thinking that many people would doubt my ability to function while being quite round. I was pleasantly surprised by how many people, brides and grooms and guests alike, treated me so kindly and thoughtfully all while allowing me to do my job. This was still a very abbreviated year for my business. 2012 saw me photographing 20 weddings by year’s end, while in 2013 I managed to squeak out 10 while having my third child smack dab in the middle of summer.

I’m so very thankful for an extra sweet face to kiss when I come home, but I can tell you I’m excited to face another year with more energy and with more time to create beautiful images. This year I decided to give up portraits and commercial work so that I can concentrate on what I love the most, weddings, and in turn allow me to balance my family and work time better. Blogging took a back seat, but I plan to bring it back full force and to start I’m recapping last year. Enjoy part one and come back to see part two.

Becky and David are the sweetest couple with such a quiet but strong adoration for each other. They were married April 13th at All Saints Catholic Church in Rossford, OH followed by a reception at the Hilton Garden Inn in Perrysburg, OH. They braved cold weather that included rain and snow and whatever exists in-between to get some outdoor photos and did it all with smiles on their faces. We headed out again during the reception to get some photos under the lights in Levis Commons, just outside of the hotel, where they went on their first date.

Rhonda and Kirk were married May 11th at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Palmyra, MI followed by a reception in Ida, MI. Rhonda attended a wedding I photographed in 2012 and I was so excited to be able to work with her and Kirk and their group of friends. They are great down-to-earth people who know how to have a good time. I do have to say that tears were not in shortage on their wedding day and that it was one of those weddings where you just know these two people were made for each other. I love it when all of the emotions of a wedding day are due to two people who have been waiting in such happy anticipation of this day since they met.

Amalia and Bobby were married on June 29th outside at the Ann Arbor City Club with a reception that followed inside. I didn’t actually get to meet Amalia or Bobby until less than a week before their wedding. They are both in graduate school in San Diego and Amalia’s mom Rossana did much of the planning for them back here in Michigan. I loved the sense of humor between these two! Bobby officially wins the award for the best vows ever and had every guest (and me) and his bride laughing out loud during the ceremony. Amalia studies marine biology and Bobby geology and the amount of scientific references that went into describing the love between these two in Bobby’s vows completely went over my head but had me giggling behind my camera all the same. I enjoyed being able to work with my sisters who took care of the hair and makeup for the bride, bridesmaids and mother of the bride and made the day easier for everyone who traveled to Ann Arbor for the wedding.

Michelle and Ben were married August 23rd at the Henry Ford Museum with a ceremony in the Anderson Theater and their reception in the Museum Plaza. This was a day to remember with this sweet family surrounded by their loving family and friends. The day started off with hair and makeup with Julie and Hannah of Imagine Three and followed with beautiful details that blew me away. When you entered the theater where Michelle and Ben got married, you were greater by the most amazing smell of flowers. Even though we had taken advantage of Greenfield Village earlier in the day to take some pictures together, Ben’s emotional face while watching his bride walk up the aisle to him was a moment to remember. This couple is surrounded by so many people that love and support them and this day was a total celebration just for them and their new life together. Guests were able to stroll through the museum while I hopped in a Model T with Michelle and Ben (and our driver) for some time to take some photos in the village after hours. The rest of the night was a fun celebration that ended a day to remember.

Come back in the next week for round 2 of weddings that I photographed in 2013 with many more beautiful shots to see!

Katherine + Tim

Break out your tissues people! While I appreciate so many moments of the weddings I am privileged to capture, it isn’t often that my emotions are affected by what’s going on. There were just so many beautiful moments during Katherine and Tim’s wedding, it was hard not to get caught up in the joy that filled the day. I’ve realized more and more, that what makes me feel like I’ve accomplished a job well done at the end of a wedding day is not that I came up with some amazing pose, but I feel accomplished if I was able to artfully capture real and raw emotion. That being said, I feel pretty accomplished looking at the images from Katherine and Tim’s wedding and here’s just a small sampling.

I love this next photo and I didn’t realize it at the moment I took it, but on the right, you can see Tim’s dad is there, in this moment and in this prayer.

Jessica + Ryan wedding

I was so excited to kick off the 2012 wedding season and to do it with such a fun couple. I loved the amount of raw emotion that went on the entire day, from sweet moments between Jessica and her dad to the giddiness in both the bride and the groom moments before the ceremony. One of the sweetest moments had to have been during the maid of honor’s toast. Jessica’s sister Jackie was describing Jessica’s initial hesitation to date Ryan because she was terrified that she could possibly lose her best friend in Ryan. You can’t help but smile looking at these photos and realizing how incredibly happy these two are to spend the rest of their life with their best friend. Congrats guys!

Well hello wedding season.

So I decided to mix things up today and actually write a blog post instead of just filling it with lovely photos. I have realized that there isn’t much of my own voice, other than my creative voice, on my blog, and I wanted to share something a little more personal.

Tomorrow is my first wedding of 2012 and I’m excited and nervous and antsy all in one. I have a lot of what I would like to think is down time during the winter and early spring, and for the last few years I have sat down and written a set of goals for myself to accomplish in that time. This past year, a lot of the goals were more personal than business related, but as I went about accomplishing them, I realized how much my personal life does affect my business. In March I had a little awakening and realized that my two lives really aren’t separate, and what I really needed was to find balance between them.

I am mom to two wonderful children and wife to an amazing man AND I am a photographer. I can’t neglect one of these and expect to shine in the others. Wearing these three different hats all make me happy and they all are a huge part of who I am. So instead of being overwhelmed by the huge amount of responsibilities I have, I have decided to take them on with a new energy and strong drive and meet them all with the passion and I love I have for them.

This is why I don’t really write more personal blogs, I feel like a rambling nutcase! What I wanted to accomplish in this was to say that I am the type of person who doesn’t feel like I have arrived. I am the type of person who sees each day as another day to try and do something better and add more knowledge to my talents. So, wedding season, you may be the most hectic time of my year, but you are an opportunity to create better images than I ever have each wedding, and you are a challenge to be a better mom and wife with everything I have on my plate.

Readers, stick with me as I have the opportunity to post the images I will capture this season, introduce an exciting project I am working on and share my growth.

I’ll end this post with the two cutest munchkins in the world.
